Rules
A partial list of SVU rules designed specifically for intramurals is provided for your preparation to play.
1. ULTIMATE FRISBEE -- Usually held on Chandler field. Teams consist of four men and two women. Substitutes are allowed and you can play with five if necessary. Cones determine the goal lines, and there are two halves with time varying from 5 to 10 minutes depending on the number of teams.
2. DODGEBALL -- Held in the SAC. Teams consist of four men and two women. Substitutes are allowed, and you can play with five if necessary. Each match consists of the best two out of three, and time limit is usually ten minutes. A sudden death period of two minutes is mandated in the event of a tie game. The team with the most still playing wins that game. Once players are out, they need to go to the sideline and line up in order, so they may possibly be returned to the game. If a thrown ball is caught, the thrower is out and a teammate may return to the game. A ball may be caught by a player after it has struck one of his/her teammates; the thrower is out, and a teammate returns. The ball is dead if it hits the floor, another ball, or any wall. A player is out when he runs too far into the offensive end and crosses the foul line. A player may not be successfully attacked on the initial “scrum” until after he backs out of the neutral zone, and he must leave the neutral zone within thirty seconds of the time play commences.
3. WHIFFLEBALL -- Usually held in the Arena. Teams consist of nine total with three of that number being women. A team may have substitutes and can play with six. Offense limited to five runs per inning. Games are three to six innings, depending on the number of total teams. The whiffleball may be thrown at a player off the base for an out in lieu of a tag.
4. WRESTLING -- Guys with guys and ladies with ladies. We will try to get close in weight divisions. Three one-minute periods.
5. TENNIS -- Regular rules with two out of three sets for a match.
6. 3V3 VOLLEYBALL -- Held in arena or SAC with one lady minimum. Best two out of three, with the first two games to fifteen and the last, if necessary, to eleven.
7. CHESS -- Held in arena classrooms or student union. Moves are timed.
8. BOGGLE, SCRABBLE -- In arena classroom or student union. Bring boggle and scrabble sets, please, as we only have a limited number.
9. RACQUETBALL -- At Washington and Lee Racquetball courts or VMI’s courts. Usually a round robin with each player playing each of the others in a match. Divisions will be announced upon completion of signups.
10. 3V3 BASKETBALL -- In Arena with a minimum of one lady on court at all times. Games are two out of three to fifteen with third game to eleven. Must win by two with no cap. Field goals are one point with normal three point shots counting as two. Games can be played on each end, if enough teams are signed up.
11. 3PT & DUNK COMPETITION -- 3POINT COMP. One-minute time limit with five shots from each of five designated spots for a total of twenty-five. If there is time left, the shooter may continue shooting from anywhere beyond the three-point line he wishes. May have only one retriever with one ball to shoot. DUNK COMP. Initial round: Each competitor gets three dunks which are each scored. Semi-final round: Each competitor gets three attempts to get one dunk which he likes in one minute of total time. Final round: Each Competitor gets thirty seconds and one dunk attempt which is scored.
12. POOL TOURNAMENT –- Straight eight-ball, one game until the finals, which will be two out of three.
13. PING PONG TOURNAMENT –- Best two out of three. First two games to fifteen and, if necessary, the last one is to eleven. Must win by two.
14. JEOPARDY BOWL -- Administered by the faculty coach with his/her rules.
15. KICK CRICKETT –- Usually in the SAC. Teams consist of six with two being ladies. A dodgeball is used as the kickball. The game is played like cricket with a trash can being used as the wicket. A cone by the pitcher is used as the base to run around. Three outs per side and the pitcher only makes the throw to the wicket (trash can) to get a batter-runner out. Balls thrown under the stage result in a two run penalty for the defense. Balls kicked over the wall and into storage are an out. This is a real fun game.
16. 4V4 VOLLEYBALL –- In arena or SAC with two women required and two guys. Best two out of three with first two games to fifteen and the last, if necessary, to eleven.
17. INDOOR SOCCER -- six players on a team, two must be ladies. Two halves of 8 – 12 minutes (depending on the number of teams) and a running clock. Goals are scored when the basketball field-goal base is hit and the ball bounces back to the court. There is absolutely no sliding, whatsoever, under any circumstances. Penalty kicks are free kicks across the length of the court. At the end of regulation, games are decided by free kicks across the length of the court.
18. KICKBALL -- Usually played on Chandler field or in the SAC or Arena. Like softball and whiffleball for rules using a kickball to play with.
19. 5V5 BASKETBALL -- Played in the arena with two timed halves (8-12 minutes). Running clock except for the last two minutes. Regular scoring in effect. Must have two women on the court at all times.
20. FOOTBALL –- Flag or Two hand touch. Played on Chandler Field. Teams are six on a side with two of them being ladies. No blocking and no diving for the ball or to make a “tackle” at the flags or for two hand touching.
21. SOFTBALL -- Usually held at Laurel Park with teams of nine, three of which are ladies. Five runs per inning and three homeruns maximum. Any homeruns after this maximum will be awarded to the other team. Cannot get a point from homeruns in the bottom of the last inning. Run rule is ten after three innings. Flip-flop rule is in effect during last two innings where a team which is losing can hit for six outs in a row to end the game.
