About the Code of Honor

The Code of Honor is a set of standards for personal conduct, created and sustained by Southern Virginia students, faculty and staff, which encourages all of us to live as leader-servants. It is based on the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. All students, as a condition of admission, whether or not they are members of the Church, commit to abide by and uphold the Code of Honor at all times and in all places while they are enrolled at Southern Virginia University.

Why does Southern Virginia have a Code of Honor?

The unique atmosphere of Southern Virginia University depends upon students, faculty, staff, and administration supporting the Code of Honor, and ensuring each other's efforts to do the same. The Code of Honor is central to our mission to prepare leader-servants and necessary to our success as the world's only liberal arts college in the Latter-day Saint tradition.

When must I keep the Code of Honor?

All students commit to keep the rules of the Code of Honor and live by its guidelines for the entire duration of their enrollment at Southern Virginia University. This commitment extends to every place the individual goes, on and off campus, until graduation, transfer, withdrawal, or dismissal from Southern Virginia. It uplifts an individual not only when classes are in session, but on weekends, during breaks, and throughout any period of absence from the university.

What happens if I violate the Code of Honor?

All violations of the Code of Honor, university rules, regulations, and policies are addressed by appropriate university authority, under the auspices of the Office of Student Life. Consequences vary depending on the violation and the circumstances surrounding it. Sanctions range from receiving counsel, to paying monetary fines, to expulsion from the university.

Who has responsibility for the Code of Honor?

The Office of Student Life is responsible for the overall administration of the Code of Honor under the direction of the Chief Operations and Systems Officer. The Office of Student Life respects the legitimate rights and interests of both the student and the university through the application of the Code of Honor Procedures. Southern Virginia University is committed to providing procedures that promote individual adherence and commitment to the Code of Honor.
