Conference Guest Guidelines
We look forward to your visit to Southern Virginia University. We hope this quick reference will help you during your stay on our campus. If you have additional questions, please contact the conference staff at 540-261-8453.
Bed Linens & Toiletries
Linens (sheets, pillows, towels, etc.), and toiletries are the responsibility of the individual guest. All mattresses are twin size (39” x 75”).
Bookstore
The SVU Bookstore sells a variety of books, supplies, toiletries, clothing, treats, drinks and memorabilia. Bookstore hours are Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. ; Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., phone 540-261-1181. Summer hours will be based on conference needs. Bookstore website.
Campus Security
Campus Security is available 24 hours at 540-261-8427. In the event of an emergency, please dial 911 for Buena Vista Police or Fire Departments. Conference leaders should contact Campus Security after 911 as well as the Southern Virginia conference staff.
Candles and Open Flame
Devices using an open flame such as candles, camping stoves, grills, fondue pots, incense and gas lanterns are not permitted in or around residence facilities.
Conference Check-Out
Please check your room for personal belongings, close the windows, turn off the lights, lock your door and turn in your room key. There is a $25 charge for keys not returned. Conference groups will be responsible for any lost or damaged property. Checkout times are scheduled in advance.
Emergency Procedures
In the event of a fire, DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR. Calmly and quickly proceed to the nearest exit, get away from the building and join your conference group. Do not re-enter the building until the Fire or Police Department has indicated it is safe. False alarms and tampering with fire equipment or smoke detectors are serious violations. Fines up to $500 will be issued to individuals or groups violating fire regulations. To report a fire, health and safety emergency, dial 911 from any phone on campus.
Firearms and Fireworks
Firearms and other weapons are not permitted on campus. If you have a weapon in your possession, a security officer must check it into the locked security closet. Failure to do so will result in being asked to leave campus immediately. Fireworks and all explosive devices are not permitted on campus. Possession or use will result in fines and/or a request to leave the campus.
Housekeeping
Housekeeping staff in each building will clean public areas daily. Daily room cleaning service is not available. If you have a repair or maintenance request, please contact the conference staff at (540) 261-8453 as soon as possible.
Kitchenettes
Some residence halls have small kitchenettes. Guests are welcome to store items in the refrigerator at their own risk. Other appliances may be used. Guests are responsible for kitchen clean up; fines will be assessed if area is not maintained. Remember to turn off appliances after use.
Laundry
Residence hall laundry machines are coin operated. Pricing (subject to change): Front loading washers - $1.50 to wash; top loading washers $1.25; $1.25 to dry
Parking
Visitor parking is available in front of Main Hall. During summer conferences, you are permitted to park in any faculty or visitor parking lot without a permit. After registering for your conference in the Stoddard Activities Center, please move your vehicle to the parking lot nearest your residence hall.
Public areas
Lounges are located in each residence hall. Your group is welcome to use areas in your assigned hall. Abuse of lounges will result in loss of privileges.
Prohibited
The use or possession of alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea and controlled substances are prohibited on campus at all times.
Room Security and Keys
All guests will receive a room key upon check-in. Please keep your room locked and your key with you at all times. There is a $25 charge for lost keys. If a key is lost, please report it to your conference organizers. Each room is individually locked. If you find yourself locked out of your room, please call Campus Security at 540-261-8427. Southern Virginia University assumes no responsibility for loss or damage of personal property.
Telephone Instructions
Residential rooms are equipped with active phone lines but telephone privileges are not included. We suggest conference guests use personal cell phones while staying on campus.
Vending Machines
Vending machines are available on the bottom floor of residence halls and in the Student Center. Snacks and drinks are also available at the bookstore.
