Annual Crime and Fire Safety Report

Date: 29 September 2011

From: Hugh Bouchelle, Director, Office of Public Safety and Security

To: All faculty, staff, students and future students of Southern Virginia University

Subject: Annual Crime Report

In an effort to improve safety and security on campuses across the country, federal law requires that an annual crime report be available to all faculty, staff, students, and future students. These requirements fall under what is known as the Cleary Act.

Below is a complete list of reported criminal offenses tracked under the Cleary Act for the last four years. The most recent of these reports were received during the last reported calendar year (in this case 2010). The statistics for 2011 will be available in October 2012.

Crimes are listed according to the legal terms and definitions provided by the U.S. Department of Education for the purposes of this report. For example: If someone’s room is entered into, without their permission, and an item taken, under the Cleary Act this is a burglary.

Disciplinary actions on campus are not reported to police and are violations of the Code of Honor, not civil law. We report all civil law violations to the local police for their decision whether to prosecute the case in criminal court. It is not unusual, in the case of a minor offense, for the local police to let our disciplinary system handle the issue.

The numbers in the crime report follow the format #/#-# where the first number is the total incidences on-campus, the second number is the number of those crimes on campus that occurred in on-campus housing, and the last number is the number of incidences that occurred off-campus.
