What is a Resident Advisor?

Summary of Duties

Resident Advisors (RAs) are representatives of the Housing Office that reside in university owned residence halls, modular units, townhouses, or houses. Under the direction of a Head Resident Advisor, RAs are available to assist residents with roommate problems, maintenance requests, and questions regarding housing policies, as well as provide emotional support in times of need. RAs conduct room inspections on a regular basis, and enforce and report violations of the SVU Honor Code and Residential Living Policies to the Head Resident Advisor, Director of Housing, or Dean of Students as appropriate.

Resident Advisors are selected each academic year from a pool of applicants based on personal maturity, recommendations from Southern Virginia staff and faculty, and an interview with the Director of Housing. All applicants must have attended Southern Virginia University for at least one semester prior to applying and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Interested applicants may view a detailed job description prior to applying.
