U.S. Ninth Circuit Judge to Speak at Fireside Tuesday

J. Clifford Wallace, former Chief Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, will address the Southern Virginia University campus community at a fireside on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom.

Judge Wallace was sworn in as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of California in October 1970. He was then elevated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in July 1972 and took senior status in April 1996. As Chief Judge he developed innovative procedures for handling the needs of a large circuit. These procedures included developing the first federal appellate long-range plan with a mechanism to set annual strategic goals, writing the mission statement for the Judicial Council and creating a cooperative education program for capital habeas corpus.

Justice Wallace graduated from San Diego State College in 1952 with a degree in economics and a minor in political science. He then went on to earn his law degree in 1955 from the University of California at Berkeley.
