Student Employment
Southern Virginia offers a variety of part-time, on-campus jobs to students, regardless of their eligibility for financial aid.
By working a modest number of hours each week, students earn money to help make their educational experience more affordable.
All students enrolled full-time at Southern Virginia are eligible to work as a student employee as long as they are attending classes and have no holds on their student account.
Students are responsible for finding available on-campus jobs and identifying work opportunities that best fit their interests, skills and class schedules.

Requirements for Employment
To be employed on campus, all students (regardless of work study status) must complete the proper tax withholding forms (VA-4 and W-4 forms) and Department of Homeland Security paperwork (I-9) before beginning their employment. These forms are provided by the Human Resources Office and can be found in Student Financial Services.
In order to complete these forms, students are required to provide at least one of the following documents that the government has deemed appropriate to prove work eligibility within the United States:
*A photo ID will also be required for those not providing a passport.
By federal law, original identification documents must be viewed to confirm authenticity. Faxed or photocopied versions of these documents cannot be accepted. No employee can begin work until these documents are completed.
Once students have completed their paperwork they will be issued a work permit ("blue card") by Student Financial Services. This work permit entitles students to apply for positions available for the academic year (August through April) directly with the supervisors of listed positions. Student employees who worked on campus the prior academic year must complete new VA-4 and W-4 forms, but a new I-9 is not required.
During Fall Orientation students may complete all of the required employment paperwork in Student Financial Services. A list of campus jobs is available online.
Federal Work-Study
Work study is a part-time campus job that helps students pay for college expenses, made available as part of the student's financial aid package. As a form of need-based aid, work-study jobs are offered based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA.
Students who receive financial aid and are either a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen with financial need may also be eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS). The Federal Government reimburses the employer for wages paid to FWS employees, which is the only difference between FWS employees and students who are not FWS-eligible.
Student Financial Services will determine whether you are qualified to receive FWS. Contact Student Financial Services regarding your eligibility to work a Federal Work Study funded job.
Note: Money earned from work study is taxable, but is considered financial aid and may be deducted on the following year's FAFSA.
