Scholarships are a form of merit-based aid that do not need to be repaid, typically awarded for outstanding academic achievements, special talents, leadership potential and other personal characteristics.

Grants are a form of need-based aid that do not need to be repaid, awarded on the basis of the financial need of the student as determined by the FAFSA.
