Applying for Aid

After acceptance to Southern Virginia University, students are encouraged to apply for financial aid to help pay for their education.

Every student who attends Southern Virginia has different financial circumstances. Though the process may vary, Student Financial Services has outlined five simple steps relevant for all students applying for financial aid.

Steps to Apply for Financial Aid

1Learn your aid options

Familiarize yourself with the types of financial aid available at Southern Virginia, including application requirements and deadlines for scholarships, grants, and loans.

Note: Student should seek and apply for private scholarships as early as their freshman year of high school.


2File the FAFSA

File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine your eligibility for federal and state aid. Remember to enter Southern Virginia’s school code (003738) when prompted.

Note: Students should first file their 2011 federal taxes before filing the FAFSA sometime after January 1 of the year they plan to attend.


3Accept your Financial Aid Award Letter

Southern Virginia will provide you with an estimated Financial Aid Award Letter based on the results of your FAFSA.

To accept your award:

  1. Log in to MySVU
  2. Click the “Finances” tab
  3. Locate your award under the "My Financial Info" section
  4. Review your award accept the aid options you would like to receive

4Submit required documents

Submit applications for relevant scholarships, grants, and / or loans prior to their respective deadlines and return any requested items to Student Financial Services.

Note: Virginia residents should remember to submit the VTAG application by July 31.


5Finalize your financial arrangements

When your documents are submitted and application complete, you must finalize your financial arrangements with Student Financial Services.

  1. Estimate your bill
  2. Select a payment plan
  3. If necessary, apply for loans
  4. Look for on-campus jobs
