La Rae Carter
Visiting Assistant Professor of Music & Music Program Coordinator
La Rae Carter is a visiting assistant professor of music and music program coordinator at Southern Virginia University.
She joined the music faculty as an adjunct in 2004, with an expertise in choral conducting and vocal coaching, and more than twenty years in secondary music teaching in public schools in Calif., Utah and Idaho. She was director of choral activities in Claremont School District, Calif., serving as Choral Director at Claremont High School for twelve years, in which time the choral program expanded from 33 students to over 250 students, and the musical theatre program was introduced, growing to 150 students.
Named chair of the fine arts department of the school district from 1989 to 1998, she served as team leader for the WASC (State Accreditation) planning committee, visual and performing arts department, being named Claremont School District and Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year in 1995-96, and she received the Los Angeles Music Center BRAVO Award for the Outstanding Fine Arts Teacher of Southern California. Her choirs were twice invited to perform at Carnegie Hall, New York City. Upon retiring from Claremont School District, she entered the Fine Arts program in Park City, Utah, where she taught for five years, serving as Director of Choral Activities, District Team Music Leader from 2001 to 2003, and Chair of the Fine Arts Department, from 2001 to 2004. She has appeared regularly in Who’s Who Among American Teachers since 1994, and Who’s Who Among American Women since 1999.
She was valedictorian of Boise High School, Boise Junior College, and Brigham Young University; a member of the International Thespian Society; National Honor Society; White Key Academic Honorary Society; Phi Kappa Phi; and Governor’s Arts Council, Utah, 1985.
She is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints, currently serving as Education Counselor in the Buena Vista Stake Relief Society presidency. She and her husband, Ron Carter, are the parents of nine children and grandparents of twenty-nine grandchildren. She currently resides in Buena Vista, Va.
