Purpose of Agency: Enrich learning for elementary-aged students with small group tutoring and a wide variety of fun activities.

Volunteer Opportunities: Work with individual students in grades 1-5 in Math and Reading in After-School Programs.  Plan sessions around your interest to share with a small group of elementary-aged students.  Students from these schools will benefit from working with college students to broaden their horizons on life, life-goals, etc.

Purpose of Agency: Elementary School

Volunteer Opportunities: One-on-one assistance to students inside and outside of the classroom, after-school homework help, assisting with the "SOL Academy" (setting up snack area, playing with participants, and helping students and participants with SOL testing preparation).

Purpose of Agency: Provide skilled nursing home care, rehabilitation, and other necessary services to residents. 

Volunteer Opportunities: There are numerous direct and indirect service opportunities, including:

  • Help with parties, socials, and special events (like birthday parties and game night).
  • Share your hobbies/interests; lead or assist with craft classes, Bingo games, musical entertainment, woodworking activities, etc.
  • Have a meal with residents (on the Center) or participate in the Adopt-a-Grandparent Resident Program.
  • Write letters for residents OR send mail to residents that don't receive mail.
  • Start a book club with the residents and read with them.
  • Organize your own activity (they pay for all supplies).
  • Create monthly bulletin boards, outlining activities.
  • The possibilities are endless!!!!!!

 *Note: The Center is the residents' home; everyone else is a guest.

Purpose of Agency: Provide program and growth opportunities for girls in the Buena Vista geographic area that will help them become girls of courage, confidence, and character who will make the world a better place. Program provides the foundation of Girl Scouting.

Volunteer Opportunities: Program providers (short-term) help girls (1) develop their potential, (2) learn how to relate to others, (3) develop values, and (4) learn how to make a contribution to society. Troop Leaders (long-term, 8-10 months) provide the same things on a long-term basis.

Purpose of Agency: Eliminate poverty housing in Rockbridge area and provide safe, affordable housing. Rockbridge Habitat has built 32 Houses since 1989.  All of the owners of these 32 houses are current with their mortgages.  Habitat works with hard-working families who just need a hand up!

Volunteer Opportunities: Build at the work sites, work in the office, and help out at the Habitat Resale Store.

Purpose of Agency: Provide therapeutic riding to disabled people (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual); provide social opportunities; provide animal therapy.

Volunteer Opportunities: Work hands-on with/groom animals (horses, cats, dogs, small animals); work on barn maintenance; clean ledging and sidewalks during lessons; and participate in Special Olympics, dinner theaters, pony races, horse shows, and fundraising events. Anything you love to do can be put to use!

Hours of Operation: 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week, 365 Days a Year

Purpose of Agency: Correctional Facility for Youth

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer positions include arts and crafts volunteers, gardening project volunteers, visitation volunteers, writing class volunteers, recreation volunteers, academic tutor volunteers, religious volunteers, and activity support volunteers.

Recreation Activities are Monday - Sunday, 6:30-7:45 and Saturday, 8:30-11:00 and 1:30-3:30.  Tutoring outside the classroom is offered Monday - Friday, 11:30-12:45 and inside the classroom Monday - Friday, 8:15-11:00 and 1:15-4:00.  It is possible for some students to participate in Sunday visitation, 12:30-4:00, for youth who do not have family/friends that visit them.  

*Note: Tutoring is not offered on holidays or teacher workdays.  Students must find out when these days are on their own and work out their schedules with the teachers.

Volunteer Opportunities: Within a short walking distance from SVU.

  • After-School Homework Help (Monday/Wednesday, 3:00-4:00) - Assist students with homework and help students prepare for tests and quizzes (English, math, science, and history).
  • 5th Grade Reading Program (Monday - Friday, 10:06-10:56; 1:05-1:55; 1:55-2:45) - Read to/with students in small groups and supervise 5th graders working on make-up work.
  • Physical Education Class for Grades 5-8 - Supervise games and assist with drills; typing skills helpful.
  • Tutor individuals in various subjects.

Purpose of Agency: Shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.  Dedicated to reducing domestic, dating, and sexual violence.  Offers free services to adults and children, men and women alike.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Hotline - Offer crisis intervention on 24-hour hotline.
  • Shelter - Work with clients in shelter.
  • Childcare - Provide childcare for clients (tutoring, mentoring, etc.).
  • Special Projects - Participate in yard work, volunteer fairs, fundraising events, and legal advocacy.
  • Volunteer Training is an intense 32-hour training that focuses on issues surrounding sexual and domestic violence and crisis intervention.  These trainings are offered three times a year. Once trained, volunteers can work with the hotline, the shelter, and as a childcare volunteer.

Purpose of Agency: Provide care and comfort for those with a terminal illness (prognosis 6 months or less), regardless of their ability to pay.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Patient Visitor - Either give a family caregiver a break or provide social stimulation through reading, reminiscing, singing, etc.
  • Administrative Volunteer -  Help at reception desk, with computer projects, etc.
  • Special Events Volunteer (more sporadic) - Help at information booths, with public speaking, and with fundraisers (like Hustle - 5K run).
  • "Brawn" Patrol - Help with moving items for patients, cleaning up yards, etc.

*Note: Hospice requires volunteers to go through orientation process.  This can be completed through home courses and meetings with the site supervisor in lieu of class-based training if SVU class schedules conflict.

Volunteer Opportunities: Assist with grant writing; tutor consumers; answer phones and complete light, alternative work/projects; assist with management of fundraising/grants database; coordinate special event programming; write for newsletter and other publications; and write press releases.

Volunteer Opportunities: YMCA After-School Program - provide each child with enriching activities in the areas of art and humanities, character development, physical fitness, homework help, literacy, and science and technology.
