Academic Excellence

Our basic educational model is decidedly old-fashioned: we match highly qualified instructors with small classes and have them work together to understand important books, challenging concepts and insightful theories. Graduating seniors from Southern Virginia rank in the top seven percent of seniors nationally in their ability to carefully and critically analyze complex materials, propose solutions and communicate their findings clearly.

Liberal Arts Core

As a liberal arts institution, Southern Virginia University focuses on the best civilization has to offer. Our rich Core curriculum will immerse you in the study of great human accomplishments in the letters, arts and sciences. You will study Greek, Roman and European works that helped shape modern political, economic, scientific and artistic thinking. Learn more about liberal arts.

Small Classes

Instead of getting lost in the crowded classrooms of larger universities, students at Southern Virginia interact with their professors in and out of class. Our average class is 16 students, feeling much like a graduate school classroom. In an atmosphere of mutual trust, our students grow in confidence and skill as they are actively challenged through discussion and one-on-one interaction.

Supportive Faculty

The dynamics of the small-class experience at Southern Virginia helps draw highly skilled and credentialed professors; 80 percent of whom have Ph.D.s or terminal degrees in their fields. Our professors care deeply for their students and are devoted to their success on campus and in life. Here, your teachers will become your mentors and your friends.
