History of SVU

We offer a unique and stimulating environment at Southern Virginia University. Our combination of a liberal arts education and a Latter-day Saint environment gives us a spirit of education and enlightenment  you can feel when you walk on campus. While we love to help you learn who we are online, through mailings, and over the phone, you can see it for yourself when you visit.

There are two ways to visit Southern Virginia University. You can either schedule an individual tour, or you can attend any of our open houses. Prospective students who visit campus in either of these ways can have their application fee waived. If the $35 fee has already been paid, it will be reimbursed.

Where is Southern Virginia?

Southern Virginia University is located in the Shenandoah Valley at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Buena Vista, Virginia. The town is small (approximately 7,000) and is a low crime environment. The university is about three miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Trail; numerous rivers, streams, camping sites, and hiking/biking trails fill the area. See what there is to do in Historic Rockbridge County.

Buena Vista, Virginia, is three and a half hours south of Washington, D.C., where many of our students take advantage of the historical attractions and the Latter-day Saint temple. School temple service trips are made once a semester, with the school providing transportation and lunch for all students who want to go serve. Within a few hours of Buena Vista are many other historic sites, like Monticello and Montpelier. The rich history of the area complements the liberal arts education we embrace at Southern Virginia University.
