Southern Virginia University is the only liberal arts college that embraces the values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Today, the typical college student is often exposed to immorality, substance abuse and spiritual malaise. Many colleges and universities are indifferent toward or intolerant of students with religious beliefs and standards. Young people who choose to uphold the tenets of their faith often stand alone.

This is not the case at Southern Virginia University. You’ll find that the defining feature of our educational model is a commitment to the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gospel principles are at the center of everything we do.

A Culture of Spirituality

Our students live by a Code of Honor based on Church principles and are encouraged to find service opportunities around campus and in the community. The university sponsors firesides and weekly devotionals. Classroom discussions are informed not only by textbooks and the best of secular thinking but also by scripture and the teachings of Church leaders.

Institute and Wards

The Church has organized five wards for young single adults to serve Southern Virginia students. Our campus is home to the Church Educational System’s largest daytime Institute of Religion east of the Wasatch Front. In 2009 the Church finished a new student ward and Institute building right on campus. Learn more about the Institute and Student Wards at Southern Virginia.

This is the only institution in the country that provides the finest of a liberal education and an environment to support the highest of LDS standards. Take away the Church, the Institute and the values and you will have just another liberal arts college. It’s the spiritual aspect that makes this university so unique.” Richard Stuart
