Registration Deposit Deadlines

Fall Semester
January 31: Deposits paid on or before January 31 are $150.*
March 31: Deposits paid on or before March 31 are $200
April 1: (Standard Deposit) Deposits paid on or after April 1 are $250
May 1: (Standard Deposit) Deposits paid on or after May 1 are non-refundable

*Students who deposit early usually have more class schedule options available to them.

Pay the Deposit

Register for Classes

  1. Pay the $250 registration deposit
  2. Fill out the Learning Community Questionnaire. Your submission will be reviewed by the Registrar, who will place you in a learning community consisting of two core classes (six credit hours)
  3. Use your student ID and your PIN (activated within one day of paying your registration deposit) to log onto MySVU (my.svu.edu), the student portal where you can register for the rest of your classes and keep track of other aspects of your student account
  4. Using the course search, view the different classes available and decide which ones you would like to take
  5. Register for courses by clicking on Add/Drop under the Academics tab on MySVU

Register for Housing

  1. Pay the $250 Housing Deposit
  2. Complete the On-Campus Housing Application on MySVU
  3. If you meet the necessary criteria* and plan to live off-campus, complete the Off-Campus Housing Application on MySVU and submit a letter of recommendation to housing@svu.edu
*Off Campus Housing Eligibility

Students wishing to live off-campus must meet at least one of the following requirements and be approved by the Housing office:

  • Junior or senior class status (at least 56 credit hours)
  • Age 21 or older
  • Married
  • Living with immediate family members within a 75-mile radius of campus
  • Living with an aunt or uncle who is a Southern Virginia University employee
  • Parent or legal guardian of a dependent child
  • Sophomore living in approved off-campus housing (River Crossing Apartments only)

Register for Institute

  1. Go to the Buena Vista Institute of Religion website
  2. Click on “Find a Class”
  3. Find a class (or two) that fits your schedule and fill out the registration information

Submit Required Forms

  1. Personal Information Form (PDF)
  2. Consent to Disclose Form (FERPA) (PDF)
  3. Student Health History (PDF)
  4. Provide proof of insurance (e.g. copy of health insurance card) or submit an Insurance Waiver (PDF)
  5. Submit your final official high school or college transcript

Make Financial Arrangements

Apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships

  1. Complete the FAFSA and send the results to Southern Virginia University
  2. Once your FAFSA is received, the Office of Student Financial Services will send you an Award Letter
  3. Sign the Award letter and return it to Student Financial Services
  4. Visit Student Financial Services to find scholarships and aid for which you qualify

Choose a Meal Plan

  1. Choose your meal plan for dining at Southern Virginia
  2. Pay for your meal plan online

Order Books

  1. Know all the course codes for your classes (e.g. ENG 120 02 – English, course number 120, section number 02)
  2. Go to the textbooks and course materials page on the bookstore website
  3. Select the course codes for each of your classes to find the books you need
  4. You can order your books from the bookstore and have them waiting for you when you get to campus, or you can find them elsewhere online.

Please note: If you choose to order your books separately, make sure to get the correct edition, which is easy to do if you search using the textbook’s ISBN number.


Pay Tuition and Fees

  1. Make final financial arrangements with Student Financial Services
  2. Log onto MySVU using your Student ID and PIN
  3. Under the Finances tab, review tuition and fees and make necessary payments

Vehicles

If you have a car, register it with the Office of Public Safety and Security. Once you have registered, you will be issued a parking decal, which will be ready for you to pick up during new student orientation.


Mail & Packages

If you want to mail a large package before you arrive on campus, then just ship it to the following address:

Be sure to call the Mail Center at 540-261-4336 to let the representative know the package is coming. If the Mail Center has not been notified that the package should be held for you, your package may be returned to the sender.

Depending on where you live during the school year, you will either be assigned a campus box or have mail sent directly to your building. To set up your campus box early, call the Mail Center at 540-261-4336.
