Career/Advanced Study Opportunities

Graduates in politics have a wide range of career options open to them but will be especially well suited for careers that involve analytic reasoning, clear and persuasive writing, and an understanding of political institutions and social scientific concepts. Politics majors often pursue positions in management and research and analysis. They also work for non-profit corporations and private firms that have interaction with the government.

Politics graduates will also be well-prepared for graduate study, either in the humanities and social sciences or in the professional programs of law, public administration and business. In connection with the pre-law club, the politics program actively assists our majors with plans to go to law school through the process of LSAT study and testing, and selection and application to law school.

Coursework in the politics major gives students an intellectual foundation in the basic principles and methods of political science. No less important than course requirements are the additional learning and independent research opportunities through travel study, summer internships and the senior paper. Our excellent travel study program, as well as our proximity to Washington, D.C. and other historical sites such as Monticello, Montpelier, Lexington and Williamsburg offer our students valuable opportunities for research, travel and internships.
