Instrumental Ensembles

Orchestra – An ensemble with 35-45 members that performs challenging full orchestral and string orchestra works from the Baroque period up to the contemporary. Talented student soloists, both instrumental and vocal, are regularly featured with the orchestra. The orchestra performs a combined work with the Southern Virginia choirs once every two years. Orchestra members have the opportunity to participate in the annual musical theatre production held during May term. There are also periodic opportunities for student conductors. No audition required.

Flute Choir – An ensemble consisting of piccolo, alto, bass and C flutes. The ensemble is a unique group at Southern Virginia and performs flute choir repertoire for chamber music settings as well as presenting a full concert each semester. Students are exposed to many different musical styles, as well as learning performance skills such as intonation, blend, balance and technique. By audition only.

Wind Symphony – The newest large performing ensemble at Southern Virginia. It is comprised of woodwind, brass and percussion players in a traditional concert band format. The ensemble draws its literature from original works for wind band as well as transcriptions of music originally composed for orchestra, organ and other genres. No audition required.

SVU Pep Band – Band that plays energizing music at home football and basketball games. The band focuses on high energy and a style that is interactive with the plays on the field and court, lending its bold, driving sound to the cheering and enthusiasm of the Southern Virginia fans. No audition required.
