Phi Alpha Theta (ΦΑΘ)
Phi Alpha Theta (ΦΑΘ) is an American honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history. The society is a charter member of the Association of College Honor Societies and has over 350,000 members, with about 9,500 new members joining each year through 860 local chapters, including Southern Virginia University.
Full national membership in Phi alpha Theta (PAT) requires a student to be currently enrolled at Southern Virginia, have a 3.0 overall GPA, and a 3.1 or better GPA in history classes, and a minimum of 12 credit hours completed in recognized history classes.
Students can join PAT as associates while they take the requisite number of course credit hours.
Recent society student run activities have included game nights, tutoring, movies, and visiting speakers, as well as preparing and presenting papers, and applying for scholarships.
In the past three years eleven Southern Virginia University students have traveled to other Virginia universities to present papers at regional conferences. Of them, four have earned awards, and one a national prize.
