Early Childhood Education

A broad liberal arts education is the best preparation for those wanting to become teachers because it equips you with the knowledge base, skills, habits of mind, and values required for effective teaching.

The Southern Virginia University Early Childhood Education minor focuses on understanding how the preschool child learns and develops within the context of home, school, church, and community. Small instructional class sizes better prepare each student for a career working with preschool or elementary school age children.

All core Early Childhood Education courses give each student a "hands on" experience through practica placements in surrounding preschool and public elementary programs.

Internship opportunities in local elementary and preschool programs are available, as well as opportunities to travel to places such as China and Russia for internship experiences.

Southern Virginia University currently offers two Virginia state teacher licensure courses: EDU 250- Human Growth and Development and EDU 260- Foundations of Education
