Careers in Biology


Biologists are employed at multiple levels, from the bachelor to the doctoral level, and in a variety of settings:

• They are employed by private industries, such as pharmaceutical or agricultural biotech, as research staff or administrators. Some even their own companies as entrepreneurs.

• They are employed at high schools, colleges and universities, or other educational institutions, such as museums, zoos, aquariums and nature centers, where they engage in both teaching and research or in direction of the facility.

• They work at government agencies, such as the CDC, FDA or The Department of Agriculture, where they are involved with research, administration or policy development. They also work for the military on defense against bioterrorism and for the EPA, cleaning up toxic waste sites. They work in national or state forests and parks.

• Biologists work at nonprofit organizations such as the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes or other nonprofit organizations that lobby for environmental protection.

• Healthcare offers a wide array of biology-oriented careers, and can include private and public employers. Healthcare careers include medicine, dentistry and veterinary science.

• There are countless other possibilities, including combining biology with law enforcement in forensic science, art in medical/biological illustration and scientific journal editing.
