Teaching Licensure

A broad liberal arts education is the best type of education for those who want to become teachers. Career teachers must be licensed by the state before they can teach in their own classroom. In Virginia, teachers must:

  • Earn a bachelors degree that is not in the field of education.
  • Take additional content and professional courses to prepare them for their licensing exams.
  • Complete a student teaching experience of at least 300 hours as part of the licensure program.
  • Pass PRAXIS tests I and II

Southern Virginia does not currently have a state-approved teaching program; however, we do offer two professional teaching courses: EDU 200 (Foundations of Education) and EDU 250 (Human Growth and Development). Students interested in becoming teachers should contact Steve Baldridge or Kim Kearney
