Core Preparatory Classes

Lawyers must be careful readers, logical and strategic reasoners, and uncomplicated writers. The liberal arts education is especially valued for its ability to help students appreciate the human condition, and the philosophical, political, economic and historical context of our legal system and particular laws and customs.

Students at Southern Virginia University intensely study core educational disciplines: the humanities, the sciences, the social sciences, and mathematics. Classes in these disciplines emphasize:

• Vigorous engagement of students in the classroom
• One-on-one interaction with professors.
• Matching classroom learning with life outside the classroom
• Emphasis on broad-based education in the letters, arts and sciences

In the classroom at Southern Virginia the student learns how to follow arguments, how to form and articulate intelligent opinions, and how to distinguish the important from the trivial.

Southern Virginia’s language requirements in English and foreign language help students become more acutely aware of the meaning conveyed through words and the grammar/syntax of English that help in drafting and interpreting documents.
